Accompanying material

Beautiful Dreamers is a National Film Board of Canada and Starway Films Inc. film. This Canadian production used the interiors and exteriors of the cottage buildings as well as the cricket field and gazebo to the south of campus. Set in nineteenth-century Ontario, the film portrays the story of American poet Walt Whitman (Rip Torn) as he joins forces with Dr. Maurice Bucke (Colm Feore) to challenge the then-current concepts of patient treatment in asylums. Inspired by true events, Beautiful Dreamers is one of the few times that the buildings of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital – standing for their London counterpart – were used to represent a mental health institution in film.
