Piece titled “Grace”, created in 2014 by Lucy Pauker with Anne Zbitnew. Zbitnew in Visualizing Absence writes: “Grace was institutionalized at the age of 19. Shortly after being admitted, she wrote this letter. It was never mailed and she never went home. Grace worked for free cleaning rooms and doing laundry and was experimented on with insulin shock therapy. She died of pneumonia as a patient of Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital at the age of 79. She is buried in the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery, in an unmarked grave.
In visual response to this letter, I collaborated with textile artist Lucy Pauker. Using intimate, worn next to the body white cotton nightgowns from the 1930’s found in a thrift shop as a blank canvas, Lucy Pauker pulled apart the embroidered flowers and, re-using the threads, embroidered parts of Grace’s letter. She used a few other threads and tangles to delicately connect the three gowns together.”
The letter which Zbitnew references reads:
“November 1894
Dear Mother,
I would like to come home on Monday, Mother. Will you come for me Monday morning and leave the washing and I will help you when I come.
The doctors said that as soon as you come, I can go home.
Grace”
