Custodial history

This was gifted to my mother by my father’s family. My mom has given it to me if I would ever like to use it one day during one of my wedding ceremonies.

Scope and content

This is a specific chunni used during a pre wedding ceremony called a “chunni chadai” during this ceremony, the groom’s family drapes the chunni over the bride's head, resembling a veil. This gesture symbolizes the groom’s family taking the initial steps to welcome the bride into their family. Typically, the chunni is a shade of red, chosen to complement the bride's skin tone, and features a gold tassel border known as “gota.”
This Chunni was designed by my father and grandmother, in collaboration with local artisans called Karigaars in Punjab who hand-sew every detail.
Women’s Scarf which is a part of a 3 piece outfit of a top and bottom as well.
Brampton, Ontario

General note

This specific chunni used during a pre wedding ceremony called a “chunni chadai” in Sikhism during this ceremony, the groom’s family drapes the chunni over the bride's head, resembling a veil. This gesture symbolizes the groom’s family taking the initial steps to welcome the bride into their family. Typically, the chunni is a shade of red, chosen to complement the bride's skin tone, and features a gold tassel border known as “gota.”
My mother
This is meaningful to me as it represents the first steps taken to welcome my mother into my fathers family and for both of my parents to start a new chapter in their life, which ultimately led to us. It is also a tradition for Sikh weddings, and it brings the two families together to celebrate the moment. This specific item meant more than the others to me (as there are a lot of ceremonies in Sikh weddings!) because it’s the first step. I also think it’s beautiful and I hope to wear it one day at my own wedding.
