Painted image on canvas. The painting is a nature scene depicting trees and a creek. On the left and right side of the image, there are tall trees. The trees on the left have leaves starting around their mid point. The tree on the right, does not have any leaves but has multiple branches sprouting out. The creek is the centre point of the painting. The creek reflects the colours around it (green, blue, white) and has more visible brush strokes. Along the top, a blue sky with a few white clouds can be seen. Below the blue sky and behind the creek, there are multiple trees with green leaves and some green grass. In the forefront of the picture, there is a diagonal tree with bright green leaves reaching from the lower left side towards the upper right. Around the diagonal tree and the trees on the side is green grass. Painting is held in a black frame.

This painting was part of the exhibit “This Old Tree”. This exhibit celebrates trees’ longevity, grandeur, and beauty. Long Branch is home to many large trees, some well over a hundred years old. Throughout that time, the urban forest witnessed a changing landscape, influenced by the people drawn to the lake shore. A constant are the flora that define the neighbourhood; silent witnesses to the changing landscapes over time. The generations of trees and surrounding natural environments of the neighbourhood are the inspiration for this exhibition. Interspersed in the forest of paintings are iconic features of Long Branch.
Pat Rice made the paintings to show the wonder and intrinsic beauty of the historic neighbourhood (Long Branch) where he grew up. This community was once lakefront cottage country that could be reached in 45 minutes by steamer from Toronto. A few old growth oak trees still remain hidden in plain sight among the houses in the area. They give a hint to how this land had once been heavily forested.
