General note
Context: My family moved from Uzbekistan to Canada in 2015, bringing with us important parts of our heritage. Among these is “Chapan” that my grandmother gifted to my mother before we left. Chapan is an Uzbek ethnic robe of wide cut with straight sleeves, without buttons or clasps. They are worn over the clothes of both men and women.
Personal Reflection: In my family, the Chapan is more than just a traditional garment—it’s a deeply meaningful part of who we are and where we come from. When we left Uzbekistan for Canada in 2015, my grandmother gifted a Chapan to my mother as a way to preserve a piece of our heritage across continents. In the Uzbek community here, wearing the Chapan at celebrations creates an instant connection with others who share the same background. When we wears it, I feel a shared pride in our heritage, and it opens up opportunities to share our stories with others, both within and outside the community. The Chapan stands as a physical link to our past and a reminder that, no matter where life takes us, we are always connected to our family, our traditions, and the enduring strength of Uzbek culture.
