Whimbrel Point is located within Colonel Samuel Smith Park. A whimbrel is a large type of shorebird which breeds in Northern Canada and the arctic. The Toronto Ornithological Club and many volunteers visit this point in the last couple of weeks in May each year to count the numbers of whimbrels flying past. Afforded protection by the Migratory Birds Convention Act of 1917, the Whimbrel population rebounded from intense market hunting in the 19th century. However the population has undergone a 50% reduction over the past 20 years. Recognizing the need to standardize procedures for recording the numbers of Whimbrel, in 2009 the Club established the Whimbrel Migration Watch. They also partnered with The Center for Conservation Biology in Virginia, USA to track whimbrel through satellite and radio. They’re very welcoming to those who wish to join them or stop by as you pass.
