Strange Brew

Vertical colour document. A black and white border is around the whole piece. The top half of the image, the background is a dark blue sky with some white clouds. At the top, there is a man in a black shirt with his arms crossed holding a fun in each hand pointing diagonally upwards and he is surrounded by white bubbles. To the left of him is a person who is in the shape of a circle wearing a red and white polka dotted one piece outfit. Beside the red outfit person, there is a yellow and white lightning bolt. Below the red outfit person, there is a grey brick castle with various towers and windows. In front of the grey castle, there is a red building which is being struck by the lightning bold and some fir trees on the other side of a small creek. To the right of the man in black there is a red van in the sky with the driver side door open and the back doors with some barrels falling out. Below the van is a white buildings with a large black sign on top. To the bottom right of the man in black, there is a man (Wearing armour) with his arms around a woman (in a black top) in front of him. Below the man and woman is a large light yellow circle with a dog in a red cape flying in front. Below the dog is a red brick building with a white sign on the front and two chimneys to the left and on the right a orange liquid is spewing from the building and down the rocks in front of the building. At the front of the image, there are two men. The man on the left is wearing a green winter hat, a brown coat, a red and white plaid shirt, and is holding a brown bottle in one hand. The man on the right is wearing a red and white winter hat, a blue coat, a blue and black plaid shirt, and holding a brown bottle in one hand. In front of the men, there is a gold coloured bottle cap with a silver coloured pointed rectangle tool over top and a glass with a mouse in it below. To the lower left and right of the men, there are six figures (five white and one black on the left, and five black and one white on the right) wearing amour, a hockey mask, and holding hockey sticks. Below the entire image, there is a white line separating a black rectangle with white text. The document is held within a black frame.

Physical Training

Front: Real Picture Post Card, Black and White Photograph. Approximately 47 men stand facing the camera in formation, legs spread and hands on their hips. They wear dark pants, white shoes, and either white t-shirts or undershirts. At the far left of the image, a man stands at attention in profile. He wears dark pants, dark shoes, a white long-sleeved shirt, and a thick belt. The area around the men is empty, likely dirt or low grass, with no defining features. In the background, at least a half dozen low buildings with prominent chimneys can be seen.

Back: Divided back, does not feature line separating sides. Text across the top reads “POST CARD” in outlined block letters. Underneath reads “MADE IN CANADA”, and below that, separated by a long space are the words “CORRESPONDENCE” and “ADDRESS”. To the right is a stamp box. The stamp box does not feature an outline, but consists of the letters “AZO” forming a border on the tops and sides. The corners of the border are marked with small symbols, possibly squares. The centre of the stamp box reads “PLACE STAMP HERE”. There are no additional decorations. A handwritten (cursive) note in black ink reads: “P.T. Course at Long Branch Ont.”

Lake Shore Road and Long Branch Car

Front: Colour photograph postcard of the Long Branch streetcar on Lakeshore Road. Dirt road is centred in image with streetcar on tracks to left. One man appears to be disembarking. Trees flank the road on either side, and a low wooden fence is prominent along the right side of the road. Behind the fence in the foreground is a telephone pole – two more poles can be seen further in the background. Also behind the fence is a view of the lake. At the top of the postcard, printed over the sky towards the right side is the title: “Lake Shore Road and Long Branch Car, Toronto, Ontario.” In the lower left corner is the identifying code: “104.069” and in a small circle the letters “JV.”

Back: Divided back. Some printed text identifies the maker as Valentine & Sons Publishing. Handwritten text in blue ink on left hand side of card. Some brown marks from centre to right hand side.

Entrance to Long Branch Park

Front: Real Picture Post Card, Black and White Photograph. Postcard of the entrance to Long Branch Park. Road entrance with stone gates at centre, trees in background, and signed storefronts to the right. No border on the image. Handwritten title on image in white, all caps, reads "Entrance to Long Branch Park." In image, two people (appears to be a man and a woman) stand in front of a storefront advertising Coca-Cola, Cold Drinks, and Ice Cream Cones. A sign further back reads “Long Branch Amusement Park.”

Back: Divided back postcard. A handwritten note in cursive is addressed to Mrs. Badgley in Canfield, Ontario from Leon. It bears most of a 1911 King George V in Admiral Uniform 2 cent stamp.

Mimico Asylum (Lakeside Sanatorium)

Front: Coloured, printed postcard. Depicts about a blue sky with some white clouds, eight red brick buildings with blueish-grey roofs, a large field, and 13 cricket players. The field is green but at the forefront of the image, there is a gravel path. The cricket players are all dressed in white. “Mimico Asylum (Lakeside Sanitorium), Toronto, Canada” is in printed text on top left. Bottom right of the image reads “JV” in a circle with the number “104,072”.

Back: Undivided back. Some printed text identifies the maker as Valentine & Sons Publishing. Handwritten text in blue ink addresses the card to Mrs. Madden, with a note from JLE. It is postmarked April 21, 1910 at 1 pm in Toronto, ON. It bears a 1903 King Edward VII 3/4 profile 1 cent stamp.

Dutch Sisters Inn, Smorgasbord Lobby.

Front: The front image is captioned “Dutch Sisters Inn, Smorgasbord Lobby” and features a full color image. The image depicts an interior room with multiple surfaces offering food in a buffet style. In the front left, a small table holds several types of bread and a large bowl of what appears to be salad. Also on the left, towards the midground of the image is a similar table that holds a white, multi-tiered object that may be a Smörgåstårta (Swedish Sandwich Cake.) A longer counter on the right side of the image holds an assortment of meats and other unidentifiable food items. Towards the back is a counter that appears to hold a cash register, and through a doorway a dining room with several chairs can be seen. The floor is finished in muted red and black tiles, and much of the furniture and fixtures are made of light brown wood. The counter holding the meat is decorated with wallpaper featuring windmills.

Back: Divided back - dividing line is stylized, continuing horizontally towards the center of the postcard from the rectangle comprising the stamp box, and then slants diagonally downwards towards a point approximately two thirds of the way across the card, ending on the right hand side at the bottom. Text along the top of the card reads "DUTCH SISTERS INN, 227 LAKESHORE ROAD, HUMBER BAY, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA MOTEL AND RESTAURANT." Below this reads "A GENUINE KODOCHROME REPRODUCTION." Alongside this block of text is "POST CARD CARTE POSTALE." At the bottom of the postcard is the branding: "THE PHOTOGELATINE ENGRAVING CO. LTD. TORONTO." All of the text and details are printed in blue ink.

The pool and patio deck at the new Seaway Towers Motor Hotel

Front: Colour photo. The photo shows the deck of a hotel. The deck is brown with white stairs on the left and middle of the deck. The deck is separated into two with a fence above the middle stairs. At the bottom of the lower deck there are some tables with green umbrellas. To the left of the tables, there is garden with a hourglass-shaped fountain. In the upper section, there is a rectangular blue pool on the right with some green beach chairs and people around. At the right, there is a pink and white tent with white pillars. To the left and behind of the deck, is a parking lot with various cars of various colours. To the bottom right, there is a white wall with balconies.

Back: Divided blank back. There is some blue text across the top with a rectangle in the right corner. There is a vertical line of text in the middle dividing the page.

The buildings get taller from bottom of the photo to the top.
